Decentralized activist group Anonymous has released a new video detailing their investigation – which began on August 14th – into the use of esoteric imagery in the Bored Ape Yacht Club’s (BAYC) NFT collection.

In their latest video, the group stated that “beyond a shadow of a doubt” both BAYC and Yuga Labs are complicit in the deliberate branding of brands with esoteric symbolism associated with Nazism and other extreme ideologies.

“At this very moment, we would like to announce that Anonymous is beyond a shadow of a doubt certain that Bored Ape Yacht Club and the Yuga Labs brand have received not one or two, but dozens of examples of esoteric symbolism and dog whistles. reflects Nazism, racism, simianization and support for pedophilia.”

A representative of Anonymous told CryptoSlate:

“The accusations that the BAYC collection has faced since last December are far more vicious than any scam of the week in the NFT space.”

The group wants to shed light on the allegations, calling for further investigation and amnesty as the community confronts Yuga Labs with the alleged “hidden in plain sight” trolling.

Yuga Labs denies the allegations

On the 24th of June Yuga Labs filed suit against concept artist Ryder Ripps, Jeremy Cahen and “Does 1-10”. Claims include false attribution, false advertising, cybersquatting and trademark infringement.

Ripps created RR/BAYC a week before the suit was filed. It has identical images to the original BAYC collection. He has always argued that the RR/BAYC collection is about pushing the boundaries of digital images as they relate to intellectual property and more meaningfully to digital assets, and how those boundaries intersect with the nascent non-fungible marketplace.

“My recent NFT work has focused on provocations and inquiries into the nature, provenance and digital ownership of NFT. Provenance has always been a decisive factor in determining the meaning and value of an artwork.

Ripps has since fired back, saying the lawsuit is an attempt to silence his claims that BAYC is affiliated with Nazism. For example, the similarity of the BAYC logo with the insignia of the Totenkopfy – the elite division of the Waffen-SS.

In a Medium post, Gordon Goner, AKA Yuga Labs founder Greg Solano, vehemently denied the allegations as a “crazy disinformation campaign,” which is puzzling considering the team is made up of “Jewish, Turkish, Pakistani, and Cuban friends.”

in response to the ban, Anonymous told CryptoSlate:

“There is a phenomenon known as ‘multiracial white supremacy’ if one is looking for a starting point to understand how this is possible.

It’s important to understand that the accusations on Twitter about the BAYC collection seem to point more to general exasperation than to pure “racism”.

CrytoSlate asked Anonymous what the ultimate goal was and why the group was not going to follow a “hacktivism” approach, to which the group replied:

“Dialogue is the most important thing here. Everyone has a threshold for how many coincidences are “too many” coincidences before something appears to be intentional. “

Anonymous promised to look into the matter

Anonymous has spent the previous weeks investigating the allegations and concluded that the claims could not be considered a conspiracy theory. To promote the issue, they aim to address the following issues:

  • Owners: to ask why so few have come forward to challenge the allegations. To that end, the group said it will focus on raising awareness of the claims, particularly in “untapped markets” to warn new NFT collectors.
  • Investors/backers/collaborators: Anonymous named several parties, including Andreessen Horowitz, Mark Cuban, Tom Brady, Neymar Junior, Kevin Hart, Adidas, Coinbase, and Tiffany and Co., to request an official response to the allegations.
  • Yuga Labs: Despite Goner’s Medium post and other public denials, Anonymous wants to know why Yuga Labs has been unable to provide clarity or take steps to “remove these associations” from the brand.

“Did you think you could inject these sick concepts simply because you understand esotericism and hyperbole better than the rest of the world?”

Anonymous challenged the founders of BAYC with this question Greg Solano and Wiley Aronow in a live chat with “our chosen representative” to discuss the concepts of Esotericism and Accelerationism.

The group confirmed that they intend to take action only by shedding light on the issue rather than hacktivism.
