Key takeaways:

  • The Vasil update was released on the Cardano mainnet on September 22nd
  • Vasil brings new Plutus v2 features, security improvements and optimized data transfers
  • The improvements are believed to improve Cardano’s overall scalability and increase network throughput

Vasil has been successfully deployed to the Cardano network

After merging with Ethereum earlier this month, another leading blockchain has successfully rolled out a major software update. Yesterday, a new hard fork of the Cardano (ADA) blockchain, known as the “Vasil” update, went live on the mainnet.

Cardano Foundation divided news on Twitter on Thursday.

The commissioning was followed by several postponements, which moved the final commissioning date from early summer 2022 to September. Vasil improves the Cardano blockchain on virtually every front, from smart contract functionality to faster transactions and better scalability.

Arguably the most important aspect of the new update is the release of Plutus v2, the second iteration of Cardano’s smart contract platform (originally released as part of the Alonzo update in September 2021). Plutus v2 introduces on-chain information sharing, internal data information, reference scripts, and a number of other smart contract improvements.

This is how Input Output Hong Kong (IOHK) – the company behind Cardano development – summed up the update in a recent blog post:

“The new features and improvements in Plutus v2 enable DApp developers to create new and exciting experiences, while the diffusion pipeline opens up the possibility of greater performance and network capacity improvements.”

Thanks to Vasil, the Cardano network now uses a more optimized security system, which “results in faster block validation and network synchronization time.” According to the developers, Cardano users can expect better performance without compromising security.

Both improvements in smart contracts – which reduce the size of transactions and make the network more efficient and capable of handling more data transfers – and security should increase the overall scalability of networks.

It is worth noting that the full online rollout of Plutus v2 features is expected on September 27th.

The price of ADA was relatively modest after the update – the coin saw mostly sideways trading over the past 24 hours, changing hands at $0.453 at press time.
