After several delays in June and July, Cardano’s long-awaited network update, the Vasil hard fork, has been successfully implemented, bringing “significant performance and feature” improvements to the network.

Vasil Hard Fork is live

Cardano development team Input Output Hong Kong (IOHK) announced on Twitter that the Vasil hard fork update was completed on the blockchain at 21:44 UTC on Thursday, September 22. IOHK tweeted:

Vasili’s successful launch marks the beginning of a five-day hard fork process, which is expected to be completed on September 27. The hard fork brings new features and at the same time protects the blockchain from data loss.

The importance of Vasili’s hard fork

The update has been touted as the most significant period since Cardano’s launch. First, Vasil will enhance Cardano’s smart contract capabilities through Plutus V2, which was originally released in September 2021.

Cardano has long been criticized for failing to compete with other smart contract platforms, but Vasil is expected to remedy that. The implementation of the update could potentially lead to the development of more decentralized applications on Cardano.

The goal of the hard fork is also to improve Cardano’s throughput with the help of diffusion pipelines, which increases the overall scalability of the network and at the same time lowers transaction costs.

On the flip side

  • In addition to Vasili, Cardano is also developing a new Layer-2 scaling solution called Hydra, which is expected to launch in 2023.

Why you should care

With Vasil working to make Cardano more developer-friendly, the project may finally begin to live up to its hype as the “Ethereum killer.”
