Chinese authorities are going after the creators of digital collectibles based on other people’s artwork that they did not have permission to use. The government’s attack is part of a campaign to combat copyright infringement and online piracy involving several departments.

Chinese regulatory authorities are moving to strengthen copyright control of online platforms

The National Copyright Administration of China (NCAC) has recently launched a campaign against copyright infringement and piracy on the Internet, together with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Public Security, and the State Internet Information Bureau of the People’s Republic of China.

The main goal of the initiative is to improve copyright control of online companies by investigating cases involving the sale and distribution of infringing products through short videos, live broadcasts and e-commerce platforms, and by promptly addressing infringing content, the agency announced in a press release. will be published on Friday.

NCAC is particularly concerned about the increasing problems of copyright protection arising from the activities of many entities operating with innovative technologies. One of the areas where the watchdog wants to increase oversight is the issuance of non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

The authority announced its intention to crack down on the unauthorized use of other people’s artwork, music, animation, games, movies and television to create NFTs, make digital collections and sell pirated scripts over the Internet.

The agency is convinced that this can be done by strengthening the entire online copyright chain, promoting regulatory standards and imposing penalties. It emphasizes that this would accelerate the creation of a market-oriented, legalized and international business environment and provide the copyright support needed to promote entrepreneurship and innovation.

Although China allows them to be issued, it has tried to curb NFT speculation. Tech giants such as Tencent and Ant Group have partnered with Beijing to move away from the crypto-related term “non-fungible tokens” in favor of the more general “digital collectibles.” In April, reports indicated that popular Chinese messaging app Wechat would freeze NFT Linked Accounts.
