  • Terra researcher FatMan has claimed that Bitcoin mixing service Chipmixer is a CIA honeypot
  • FatMan cited several perceived problems with the way Chipmixer was set up and is run to support his claim.
  • The CIA is known to be involved in some crypto projects

The Bitcoin mixing servicee Chipmixer has been accused of being the “Honeypot of the United States” by those known Terra critic FatMan (@FatManTerra). In a series of tweets yesterday, FatMan cited several reasons why he believes Chipmixer could have been created by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and pointed to the way it was designed and certain parts of its modus operandi for backup. his demands.

The CIA is known to have been involved in crypto

In December of last year, the head of the CIA William Burns said that the agency had “several different cryptocurrency-focused projects” underway, news that has led to a number of claims and conspiracy theories over the past 12 months, some valid, some not.

However, FatMan believes he has come across a potential candidate in Chipmixer, which was posted in May 2017 to “a new anonymous account” BitcoinTalk. FatMan says it soon became popular because it “offers mixing through swappable outputs, large reserves, smooth UX, clearnet connectivity and true anonymity (external analysis).”

FatMan then lists several reasons why he is “absolutely certain” that Chipmixer was designed and launched by the CIA, including:

  • A donation model that “is generally not a viable business model”
  • Start-up costs in the millions “despite zero revenue”, suggesting a private bank
  • ChipMixer operators have “full access to every event – de-anonymized!”
  • Some high-profile users (eg the Twitter hacker) have been caught after using it
  • Chipmixer has survived the suppression of the Bitcoin mixer completely unscathed

Not everyone agrees

Some agreed with FatMan’s assessment, while others were skeptical of his funding claims, while others simply dismissed the whole thing:

While we won’t know if FatMan is right for a while, and we may never be, reports of an old white van suddenly screeching out of Chipmixer HQ as soon as the tweet thread was dropped suggest he might be on to something.
