America’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, better known as DARPA, has turned to analytics firm Inca Digital build out a new crypto mapping tool that analyzes the impact of cryptocurrencies on US national security.

The terms of the Small Business Innovation Agreement (SBIR) will also include information on the role of crypto in illegal financing.

Specifically, Inca Digital’s government contracting department “provides information on the use of blockchain-based technologies related to money laundering, terrorist financing and sanctions evasion between systems.”

The research work also explains how crypto moves in the ecosystem, unlocks the keys on and off, and how crypto can affect traditional finance, among other goals.

DARPA is a research agency of the US Department of Defense that works closely with the military to develop new technologies. The agency also played a key role in developing some of the first iterations of the Internet.

Adam Zarazinski, CEO of Inca Digital, said in a prepared statement that “digital asset markets offer incredible promise, but they also struggle with money laundering, market manipulation, and state actors that can pose risks to U.S. national security.”

Once launched, the mapping tool will be available to the US government as well as private companies, and will join other on-chain cryptographic services offered by companies such as Chainalysis and CipherTrace.

Inca Digital has not yet responded Decryptrequest for comments.

Crypto hack in the US

The new research comes amid growing regulatory concerns and crackdowns in the crypto world.

In August, the US Treasury Department to the blacklist the Ethereum mixing service Tornado Cash.

The department added the project’s website and several Ethereum addresses to the list of specially designated citizens. This list is usually reserved for terrorist organizations and international criminals.

Shortly after the blacklist, an open source developer who worked on Tornado Cash prisoner in Holland.
