Anthony Pompliano, podcast host, Bitcoin minimalist and cryptocurrency investor, said sometime ago, when much of the Ethereum network was hosted by third-party clouds such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), a cloud service operated by e-commerce giant Amazon.

He claimed some time ago that Jeff Bezos has the authority to stop Ethereum-based DeFi dapps at any time because Pomp has serious doubts about its decentralized nature.

In addition, he rhetorically questioned the proportion of Ethereum-based DeFi projects from the community that are truly decentralized, expressing skepticism rather than seeking a concrete answer.

Pompliano’s concerns about DeFi’s decentralized nature

In their simplest form, cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum are just pieces of software. They require hosting to function effectively, just like any website or web application. Also, the Ethereum network is much larger and harder to host on devices at home, while the Bitcoin network is still only 300 gigabytes.

of Pompliano Tweet, “[He] could shut down most of these Ethereum-based “DeFi” applications simply by shutting down AWS, sparked a debate about Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. If all you’re doing is running servers with Jeff, you’re not decentralized.

Even so, Pompliano – as he’s known – didn’t think his sting would last long. Shortly after, Camilla Russo, founder and editor of The Defiant, tweeted in response to Pompi’s statement: “Ethereum nodes could be more decentralized. However, the evidence does not support this claim.

According to data from Ethernodes, which refers to cloud service providers, 70.5% of Ethereum nodes are operational, as noted by Russo. As a result, only 33% of these nodes use AWS. This means that 23%, or less than a quarter, of the Ethereum network is on AWS.

Because of this, according to Russo, Bezos could not shut down the Ethereum network at will.

Nevertheless, a disgruntled Pomp continued to ask the tweet’s respondents (at least three times) whether they thought DeFi applications were truly decentralized.

BTC nodes also use AWS

Eric Vorhees, creator of cryptocurrency trading platform ShapeShift, made a similar case for Bitcoin: “Most Bitcoin nodes also run on AWS, because AWS runs on most all kinds of servers.

But Vorhees’ claim was debunked. According to Bitnodes, Alex Thorn, an investor at blockchain venture capital firm Avon Ventures, detected that Bitcoin nodes were “much more widespread” online and appeared to be run by home users.

Regardless of whether Ethereum is decentralized, it is clear that there is an ongoing feud between it and the Bitcoin community.

Uniswap is outside of Amazon’s control

User Pomp agreed with Ross Campbell when he said that Amazon cannot close immutable contracts or the ipfs interface. Bezos cannot stop immutable contracts or the front-ends served by IPFS. One example of Uniswap in IPFS. Tushar Jain, Camila Russo, Adam Back of Blockstream, Ouriel Ohayon of ZenGo and others who disagreed with the views of the discussion.

ShapeShift CEO and founder Erik Voorhees also took part in the controversial discussion. He began by pointing out that AWS also hosts a large number of Bitcoin nodes. Winnie Lingam, an investor, supported him in this. Voorhees took a different stance on that debate in a later tweet without mentioning it. He contrasted those who criticize Ethereum today as modern Bitcoin maximalists with the “nevercoiners” who attacked Bitcoin in its infancy. It’s scary, he grumbled.
