  • The project’s developers explained that the change was due to Solana’s ability to improve the efficiency and scalability of the projects built for it.
  • Many developers consider Solana to be the best network for building distributed applications.

On September 22nd, the Helium Foundation released an official statement that it would transfer the Helium network to the Solana blockchain after the community voted on the HIP 70 proposal. At the end of the voting process, more than 81 percent of token voters supported moving to Solana. Part of the proposal states that helium oracles would include data transfer and coverage proof mechanisms.

The Helium Foundation added that it hopes to complete the transfer before the end of the fourth quarter of 2022. Amir Haleem, CEO of Nova Labs and founder of the network, told the media that he is optimistic that the migration will be completed by the end of Q4. 2022.

Haleem explained that the Nova Labs team (representatives of the core contributors and founders of the Helium network) began working on Helium’s off-chain oracles to ensure compatibility with the Solana-based design. Helium’s co-founder also said that on-chain work, such as redeeming and minting tokens, is simpler.

However, the Solana blockchain includes helium tokens and governance. According to the developers, Helium enjoys several benefits from this move. More of its native token (HNT) is available for more subDAO reward pools, improved mining consistency and ecosystem support.

In addition, HNT and subDAO tokens are more useful, while data transfer becomes more reliable. Earlier this week, Nova Labs (the company behind Helium) announced a partnership agreement with T-Mobile, the most well-known US telecommunications service provider. The partnership will lead to the launch of Helium mobile, a crypto-powered mobile service that allows users to earn rewards in digital currencies.

Helium mobile users with a 5G-enabled device can earn token rewards for helping identify Helium dead spots worldwide. They would also receive the same reward for sharing their feedback on the quality of the coverage. Helium, a blockchain wireless communication protocol, offers open source coverage worldwide.

More than 900,000 hotspots have been deployed with Helium since its launch three years ago, with the number of units growing by 1,000 every day. Since the program went live last month, there have been more than 2,500 active 5G helium hotspots in 889 US cities.

Solana as a hub for distributed application development

According to many project developers, Solana (Helium’s new blockchain) is the best network for building decentralized applications. Based on voice transactions, Solana’s daily transaction volume has increased by 100 percent and moved from 100 million to 200 million. The blockchain’s user base crossed the million mark in May of this year.

Helium developers suggested moving to Solana because the blockchain has the right features for scaling projects and improving operational efficiency. Once the migration is complete, the team will unveil a new version of the Helium wallet app. The announcement also states that Helium’s layer 1 blockchain history will remain public. Additionally, users can use the new wallet app by updating the current one.
