Resale Ticket Scam Detection

The prices of resale tickets are often astronomical, and there is no guarantee that the tickets are genuine. However, it is important to know what to look out for when spotting a scam.

  1. Social media platforms, including Twitter, are prime spots for scammers.

It is always important to check things like when they joined the platform, how many posts they have etc.

If they joined that day and have hardly any posts or their profile only shows posts about alleged tickets, we strongly recommend avoiding the seller at all costs.

  1. Beware of phishing emails

Beware of phishing messages pretending to sell cheap tickets to a concert/event you want to attend. This can lead to an attacker stealing your user information, including credit card information and login information.

Things to pay attention to may be unusual formatting of the email, font of the text, etc. DO NOT reply to the email if you suspect the seller is a scammer.

  1. Don’t let the screenshots/confirmation emails fool you

Scammers can easily create this to lull you into a false sense of security. They may ask for your email address to send you tickets, but avoid this at all costs. You don’t want to give out your personal information, including your bank details and address, to potential scammers.

As with phishing messages, be sure to watch out for unusual formatting, wrong fonts, etc., as these can indicate a scam.

  1. Consider only purchasing from a site that is encrypted for payment

Look for a closed padlock symbol in the website’s address bar. Make sure the URL starts with “https” because the “s” means a secure site.

We also recommend checking if the website’s SSL certificate is really genuine or not – you can do that with something like Godaddy SSL Check. If you are considering buying from the site, make sure you pay by credit card for security reasons.
