Alejandra Guajardo, the Miss Universe 2023 contestant from El Salvador, surprised the viewers on Wednesday night with her choice of costume. Guajardo walked on stage at the 71st Miss Universe National Costume Show in a costume that represents “the evolution of Salvadoran currency,” Miss Universe El Salvador’s official Instagram account described, adding that the outfit was designed by Francisco Guerrero.
Miss El Salvador’s national costume features cacao beans, colón, the US dollar and the Bitcoin symbol. Cocoa was originally used as currency in El Salvador. The colón became the official currency of El Salvador from 1892 until it was replaced by the US dollar in January 2001. The predominant colors of the costume are gold, silver and bronze.

Now Bitcoin is legal tender in El Salvador alongside the US dollar. El Salvador became the first country to make the world’s largest cryptocurrency legal tender in September 2021. Since then, under the leadership of pro-bitcoin president Nayib Bukele, the country has bought thousands of BTC for its coffers. In November last year, Bukele announced that his country was buying bitcoins every day.
El Salvador’s Legislative Assembly on Wednesday approved a digital asset issuance law that was proposed last November. It includes a new regulatory framework for the issuance of bitcoin-backed Volcano bonds. “This new regulatory framework for digital assets paves the way for its much-anticipated Volcano token,” says Bitfinex, which will be the technology provider for the country’s Volcano token.
