In brief

  • Pixelmon, the Web3 gaming project that raised $70 million in a primary NFT sale, has announced new management and development plans.
  • The project was widely panned after its February artwork was revealed, but the original creature artwork has since been replaced.

Perhaps no project was a bigger sign NFT the world’s excess and speculative frenzy earlier this year Pixelmonproject that raised $70 million by selling NFT devices that promised a Pokémon-like experience—and then a tattered piece of art was revealed, which was widely staked and produced plenty of memes.

Pixelmon’s founder even called the art reveal a “horrible mistake.”

Several months later, the Ethereum-based gaming project is launching a comeback. Today, Pixelmon announced a new management team and revamped roadmap following the recent release of updated artwork, transforming the blocky, Minecraft-inspired models into more polished, smoothed 3D assumptions.

Now, Pixelmon’s developers plan to turn the collectible NFT monsters — which sold for as much as 3 ETH (about $8,100) each in the initial sale — into interactive 3D characters that can be used in the upcoming Pixelmon online game, as well as other metaverse games.

Took over development of Pixelmon earlier this year LiquidXa Web3 A VC studio that helps build NFT-based projects. According to the press release, LiquidX acquired a 60 percent stake in the project, and LiquidX founder Giulio Xiloyannis serves as Pixelmon’s CEO.

Originally, Pixelmon planned to release a playable alpha test version of the game by the end of 2022. According to the new roadmap, the game’s alpha testing will instead begin in the first quarter of 2023, and the game’s roadmap includes the future launch of a virtual land. NFTs and separate utility and management tokens maintain Pixelmon’s finances. The full game is scheduled to be released at the end of 2023.

Additionally, Pixelmon offers a free-to-play mode that anyone can play without having monster NFTs, which currently starting at 0.36 ETH ($475) in the best aftermarket at OpenSea. Axie Infinityanother NFT game inspired by Pokémon, released its own free game mode after initially requiring NFTs to play.

Pixelmon may be trying to outdo its widely mocked launch in many ways, but the project also includes the memes that turned it into an infamous icon in the NFT space.

When the artwork was revealed in February, one particular monster, named Kevin, captured the imagination (and derision) of NFT collectors and quickly became one of the most valuable Pixelmon NFTs. While the rest of the Pixelmon creature artwork has been updated and revamped, Kevin’s blocky, ogre-like form is barely touched.
