Sky Mavis, the creator of the hugely popular Axie Infinity game, has announced a partnership with Google Cloud.

The partnership will significantly help tighten the security of the Ronin blockchain and enable it to scale safely and sustainably.

Many years of cooperation

In most cases, hacked protocols remain severely crippled. However, some projects are able to analyze such cases and implement certain measures to ensure that they do not happen again. One such company is Sky Mavis, creator of the wildly popular game Axie Infinity, which has announced a partnership with Google Cloud to improve the security of the Ronin blockchain. The partnership also helps the blockchain scale sustainably and build a rewarding gaming experience.

In a multi-year collaboration, Google Cloud acts as an independent validator of the Ronin blockchain. Others will also join the validator pool, such as DappRadar, Nansen and Animoca Brands. Google Cloud helps monitor the availability of the validator and promote the overall security of the Ronin network.

Sky Mavis COO Aleksander Larsen released a statement saying,

“Validators have an important responsibility to ensure that Ronin transactions are processed correctly. They also act as key ecosystem partners and moderators. Google Cloud, a recognized developer community participant with deep technical expertise in blockchain infrastructure and using validators, was naturally one of the best choices. Google Cloud has been our strategic cloud provider since 2020, so welcoming them now as Ronin’s newest and 18th validator is a big deal for us, especially as we work towards our original goal of having 21 independent validators securing the network.

Creating a more secure infrastructure

Sky Mavis founder and training manager Viet Anh Ho, one of the main reasons for the collaboration between Sky Mavis and Google Cloud is the latter’s ability to automatically scale and automate application deployment. He further explained and stated,

“These free our engineers to break new ground and delight users with connected and immersive experiences – all without disrupting active gameplay.”

On the Google Cloud side, Google head Ruma Balasubramanian announced that the team is working with Sky Mavis to help the latter accelerate its roadmap and grow the Ronin network with a much more secure infrastructure. The Google Cloud team also praised Axie Infinity’s play-to-earn concept and shed some light on other potential opportunities the collaboration could present.

Ron’s Hack

In March, Sky Mavis announced that the Ronin Network, which supports Axie Infinity, was the target of a crippling hack. As a result, the hackers were able to steal 173,600 ETH worth about $594.6 million at the time, and an additional $25.5 million. As a result, the total loss from the hack was a whopping $620 million.

The Ronin blockchain operates on a Proof-of-Authority consensus mechanism, and validators are selected based on credibility. Selected validators are responsible for verifying, voting and maintaining transaction records on the Ronin blockchain. Because of its emphasis on decentralization, new validators are proposed and voted on. According to the current requirements, at least 70 percent of the current validators must approve the proposal to become new validators.

In the past, Sky Mavis had set up a temporary backdoor to handle a higher volume of transactions. This backdoor was a vulnerability that allowed hackers to stage a crippling hack Ron’s network.
