Brazil loves a player with flair, a poster boy, someone to hang their yellow and blue hopes on. And with the World Cup just weeks away, it looks like it has confirmed the perfect – Vinícius Júnior: Real Madrid’s 22-year-old flying winger.

Mind you, this is the man who will take La Liga by storm, not compatriot Neymar, the 30-year-old who has carried the country’s footballing expectations for so long. The world’s most expensive transfer doesn’t have quite the same appeal he used to, and for different reasons.

Neymar is as big a brand as a footballer, with more than a dozen sponsorships and his own company NR Sports, which manages all his image rights. The long-time Paris Saint-Germain forward maximizes that celebrity, and the club’s growing status as a fashion brand transcends the sport itself. According to the social media barometer, he ranks high on the interest scale, trailing only Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in global soccer following, according to one report.

The striker’s star appeal means he’s a natural pin-up player. But in terms of talent, Vinícius surpasses his compatriot as Brazil’s top technician, driving much of Real’s relentless trophy haul, even if it’s not the obvious choice. In November and Brazil’s big games, he will lack Neymar’s long support list, but he will be required to be even more dangerous on the pitch.

Age is also a factor, as Neymar’s dynamic best is arguably behind him rather than in front of him. Aside from regular domestic honors at PSG, he has yet to reach the pinnacle of European football and is yet to achieve World Cup stardom with Brazil. He is also yet to claim his first Copa América trophy.

Neymar recently gave an interview DAZN, where he talked – often in one word – about some of the best players, including Messi, Ronaldo and Luis Suárez, including rising talents Pedri, Eduardo Camavinga and Jude Bellingham. One name absent was Vinícius’, although he is probably the most exceptional of the bunch.

With trickery and, more importantly, the explosive pace of some youngsters, no defender wants to face Vinícius at the moment. His link-up with Karim Benzema is fluid and – when they’re in the team – Real always look like a hit to win, even when the clock is ticking down and they need goals to get over the line. He plans to stay at Los Blancos after becoming a Spanish citizen – and a new long-term deal is likely on the horizon.

As for this season, Neymar’s seven goals provide a quick start, although PSG’s repeated dominance in France means it’s hard to read too much into this. Vinícius has also made a strong statement as he continued his excellent form from last campaign, which ended with his winning goal in the Champions League final against Liverpool.

And as for Brazil, both look set to enter this year’s World Cup with confidence. Neymar topped his country’s points table in qualifying and was second in the overall competition with eight hits. Vinícius’ international pedigree is dwarfed by that of his teammate, but his form leaves him in a prime position to carry the team in Qatar.

More specifically, Neymar needs all the help he can get for the Selecão. Expectations for Neymar have been high at international level and he has more talent around him to share the responsibility, which helps the overall cause. Individually, he has not been the only difference. Currently, there is no better player to share that weight than Vinícius. In the form of his life, he supersedes his compatriots to the greatest extent possible.
